The story of Joan of Arc:
Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl born in 1412 who, believing she was guided by divine voices, led the French army to a major victory at Orléans during the Hundred Years' War. Her leadership helped inspire the French to victory and enabled the coronation of Charles VII. She was captured by the English, tried for heresy and witchcraft, and burned at the stake at age 19. Early life and divine calling:
- Born around 1412 in Domrémy, France, Joan was a pious peasant who claimed to have visions from God, including Saint Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine. These visions instructed her to help the French crown and expel the English.
- Military leadership:At about 17, she convinced the Dauphin Charles to allow her to join the French army. Her arrival boosted the morale of the French troops, and she played a key role in the lifting of the siege of Orléans in 1429, a turning point in the war.
- After the victory at Orléans, she accompanied Charles to Reims, where he was formally crowned King of France. This fulfilled a key part of her mission.
- Capture and trial:In 1430, Joan was captured by Burgundian forces, who sold her to the English. She was put on trial by a pro-English ecclesiastical court in Rouen, which found her guilty of heresy and witchcraft.
- Execution and legacy:Joan was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. The verdict was overturned by a posthumous rehabilitation trial in 1456. In 1920, the Catholic Church canonized her, and she is now honored as a saint and a national heroine of France.
